Burnham and European leaders arrive in Kyiv as Ukraine marks Independence Day

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham arrived in Kyiv on Monday, marking the start of his first overseas trip since assuming office. The visit coincides with Ukraine's Independence Day, which the country observes on August 24th, commemorating its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Burnham is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and co-chair a meeting with other international leaders, often referred to as the "coalition of the willing." The gathering aims to strengthen support for Ukraine during this pivotal period.

European leaders from various nations have also participated in the visit, including European Council President Antonio Costa, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, and Estonian President Alar Karis.

A significant aspect of Burnham's visit is his expected announcement regarding the U.K. Government's decision to permit defense company MBDA to share classified information about British components used in the SCALP long-range missile. This move could facilitate France and Ukraine in advancing plans for local production of the weapon, leveraging shared French and British technology in both systems.

Additionally, Burnham will join in the Independence Day celebrations in Kyiv, underscoring the shared commitment to Ukraine's future and continued international support for the nation as it marks 35 years of sovereignty since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
