Marco Rubio congratulates Ukraine on Independence Day and reaffirms U.S. support

Western leaders and officials arrived in Kyiv on August 24 to commemorate Ukraine's Independence Day, as declared by Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. Speaking on social media, Sybiha emphasized that independence is not merely an abstract concept for Ukraine; it was fiercely defended against all odds. Sybiha affirmed that in times like these, nations recognize the importance of having allies by their side, declaring that today, they know who their true friends are.

Among the visiting dignitaries was U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who made his first trip to Kyiv since assuming office. Burnham is set to chair the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a body established by London and Paris under his predecessor, Keir Starmer. In addition, Burnham announced that the U.K. has agreed to permit defense company MBDA to share classified information regarding British components for the long-range SCALP missile, facilitating Ukraine's potential production of its own missiles.

European Council President Antonio Costa, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, and Estonian President Alar Karis, alongside other Nordic and Baltic leaders, also descended upon the Ukrainian capital. This year's holiday marks Ukraine's fifth Independence Day since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion in 2022.

In his address, President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted that Ukraine is no longer a victim but a fighter, cautioning that Moscow should not be allowed to seize the initiative or deceive Europe and the world. Zelensky rallied Ukrainian soldiers, urging them not to give up Donbas, Ukraine, and emphasizing their status as the best defenders and the most formidable army in Europe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Zelensky, made the gravest error in his plans for Ukraine by underestimating the enemy's assessment of our resources, stockpiles, and equipment. Instead, Putin failed to account for the most crucial factor: Ukraine's people — the greatest achievement of Ukraine's independence. Earlier, Sybiha indicated that Ukraine's allies were expected to announce supplementary aid packages on Independence Day.
