Afoko to file nomination for NPP National Chairmanship race on Tuesday

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko is set to file his completed nomination papers for the party’s upcoming National Chairmanship race on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The filing will take place at the NPP’s headquarters in Accra, following the availability of nomination forms which opened on August 18.

This move is part of the extended nomination window initiated by the NPP National Officers Elections Committee, which has postponed the deadline for completed nominations from August 27 to August 29, due to the high level of interest from potential candidates. Paul Afoko announced his intent to run for the National Chairmanship in July 2026.

He is promoting his “3R Agenda” – Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture – which aims to mend internal party divisions, refurbish the party’s structures, and secure a victory in the 2028 general election. His campaign has involved interacting with delegates and supporters from various regions, with a strong emphasis on reconciliation and unity as crucial factors for the party’s recovery after its loss in the 2024 general election.

Afoko's return to the National Chairmanship race is also noteworthy, as he previously held the position before being ousted amid a prolonged internal party conflict. Upon submitting his nomination papers, Afoko will advance to the subsequent stages of the NPP’s national officers election. The vetting process for participants is scheduled from August 31 to September 3, with results expected on September 5.

Appeals will be heard from September 6 to 7, and the final voting by national delegates is slated for October 3, 2026.
