Trump threatens 50% tariffs on all cars and trucks from Canada amid trade fight

President Donald Trump announced on Monday plans to raise US tariffs on all cars, trucks, and automotive parts imported from Canada to 50% starting on January 1, following the collapse of trade talks between the two nations. The proposed deal would have reduced the top tariff rate on Canadian cars and light-duty trucks from 25% to 15% and lowered tariffs on aluminum and steel from 50% to 25%, but negotiations stalled over several issues, including whether US tariff relief would apply to medium or heavy-duty trucks.

Trump emphasized that vehicles assembled in the US would be exempt from the tariffs, asserting that Canada would be treated like a state from now on. He also accused Canada of being among the worst nations to do business with, describing them as entitled, while asserting that Canada needs the US more than the other way around.

Canada has long been one of the top two US trading partners, with US goods and services trade totaling $872.3 billion last year, a 4.6% decrease from the previous year. Most of Canada's goods are exported to the US, while almost half of Canada's imports come from the US.

The auto industry is deeply intertwined with both Canada and Mexico, and the imposition of these tariffs could have significant repercussions for American production. Flavio Volpe, president of Canada's Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association, warned that a threatened US tariff on Canadian auto parts would ultimately impact US auto assembly, as those specific parts are crucial for US auto manufacturing.

The White House has yet to provide further details on the threatened tariffs, while the Canadian government has not yet commented on the matter. Canada, in retaliation, announced that it would impose tariffs on some US goods starting September 8 in response to the 50% levies imposed on $20 billion in Canadian products by Trump.

The trade dispute has already forced many automakers to consider scaling back production in Canada, resulting in a 22% reduction in Canadian imports of US vehicles. Major automakers have not yet responded to Trump's announcement, but industry insiders expressed skepticism about the threat, noting that previous tariff announcements by the president have not come to fruition and that such a high tariff rate would likely prompt a significant Canadian retaliation.
