Rays veteran pitcher Nick Martinez proves to be an effective skid stopper for AL East leaders

In an attempt to halt their dwindling lead in the AL East, the Tampa Bay Rays found solace in the performance of veteran pitcher Nick Martinez. Struggling in a slump that had compressed their division lead, the Rays needed a win desperately. As the season progressed, Martinez stepped up as a crucial factor for Tampa Bay, retiring 18 of the 19 batters he faced against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.

The Rays' manager, Kevin Cash, praised Martinez for providing a much-needed big start. "We needed a big start, obviously, and Nick provided that," Cash remarked. Over the past season, Martinez has been a stabilizing force for the Rays, posting a 13-4 record after being signed as a free agent in February.

This victory, a three-game sweep averted by a narrow 3-1 margin, marked a turning point for the Rays. With Martinez's strong start, Tampa Bay went on to secure seven of their next nine games. The manager himself highlighted the importance of Martinez's contributions, stating, "Hopefully, it creates some momentum for us going forward."

Martinez's performance was notable for his ability to maintain a perfect inning after a shaky outing just three days prior. After yielding six runs over 3 2/3 innings in a loss against Toronto, the right-hander bounced back with a perfect outing in Baltimore. Reflecting on his pitch count, Martinez stated, "There's no real correlation between starts," emphasizing the need to maintain focus and prevent a slump from escalating.

The Rays' road progress has been particularly impressive, with Martinez winning four straight starts on the road. Now, the team heads to Detroit to attempt to rebuild the lead they've lost, which has shrunk from a six-and-a-half-game advantage on August 15 to just three games on the night of the victory.
