Merdeka season keeps this Kuala Krai tailor busy

In the run-up to Malaysia's National Day and Malaysia Day, tailor Aimi Aidora Ramli has found herself busier than ever creating colourful outfits inspired by the Jalur Gemilang. Beginning her crafting journey as a fun personal project, Aimi's creations soon turned into a seasonal source of income, thanks to parents seeking distinctive clothing for school events, competitions, and themed programmes.

Her range has since expanded beyond patriotic outfits to include traditional clothing inspired by Malaysia's diverse communities, with many pieces offered for rent during the National Month season. This year, she completed 12 sets for girls and three sets for boys, drawing from Malay, Chinese, and Indian styles. Aimi's motivation lies in blending the festive spirit with her passion for sewing, while also instilling a sense of patriotism in young Malaysians and showcasing the cultural diversity and unity of the Malaysian community.

The cost of her outfits, including accessories, ranges from RM45 to RM65, depending on the design and pattern chosen. The demand for her creations peaks around National Day and continues through Malaysia Day, with Aimi expecting orders to remain steady until mid-September. During this time, sewing takes centre stage, but Aimi also takes orders for decorative flower arrangements. For parents, the appeal is simple: a colourful, slightly different outfit that is unmistakably Malaysian.
