Is the US seeing a turning point in obesity rates?

The United States has been facing an obesity epidemic since the late 1970s, but recent data suggests there may be a turning point in obesity rates. Benjamin Rader, an epidemiologist at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, recently published a study indicating a decline in obesity prevalence in 2023 for the first time in over a decade.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey also reported a slight decrease in obesity rates between 2021 and 2023. These findings come as new anti-obesity drugs, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound, gain popularity in the US. In 2021 to early 2026, prescriptions for these drugs more than quadrupled. GLP-1 agonist drugs work by promoting a feeling of fullness and slowing down gastric emptying, leading to weight loss in many patients.

Some researchers, like Peminda Cabandugama, an endocrinologist and spokesperson for The Obesity Society, believe the use of these drugs and increased focus on weight management has played a significant role in the decline of obesity. However, Rader cautions that it is too early to definitively attribute the decline to these drugs, as more data is needed to establish a causal relationship.

Some experts, including a study by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, predict a rise in obesity rates by 2035, suggesting that the increase could be due to the lack of accessibility and affordability of these drugs for many Americans. Despite the uncertainty, Rader maintains that obesity remains a major public health crisis in the US and deserves continued attention, funding, and alternative solutions.
