Guinea landfill collapse kills 30 in Conakry after heavy rain

On Sunday morning, a landfill collapse in Conakry, Guinea's capital, claimed the lives of 30 individuals and left 6 others seriously injured. The incident occurred at 2:00 am (0200 GMT) in the Dar-es-salam neighborhood of the Bbessia district, situated on the outskirts of the capital. According to a government statement, the collapse took place before dawn and was triggered by heavy rains.

Lancine Sylla, a neighborhood leader, had previously expressed his concerns about a high death toll to AFP. He reported that 18 bodies had been recovered and taken to the morgue. The minister for territorial administration, Djenabou Toure, visited the accident scene, where he witnessed excavators participating in a search-and-rescue operation. Onlookers gathered around the site, witnessing the ongoing efforts to save lives.

In the lead-up to the disaster, the government had taken steps to address safety concerns surrounding the landfill. They had previously ordered the expulsion of residents and the implementation of safety measures around the site, citing fears of a potential collapse.
