Landslide at Guinea landfill kills 30, government says

A massive landslide at a landfill in Guinea's capital Conakry has claimed the lives of 30 people, according to the government. Rescue efforts are ongoing at the site, which witnesses describe as large enough to bury an apartment building. The incident occurred early Thursday morning in the Gbessia commune. Six individuals are reported to be seriously injured, while 16 more have suffered less severe injuries.

One eyewitness, Cire Diallo, lost all five of her children in the tragedy. She expressed her grief, stating, "I have lost all my children. All I can do is put my trust in God."

Guinea, renowned for its vast bauxite reserves and promising iron ore deposits at Simandou, faces significant infrastructure challenges. Over 3.7 million of its 15.1 million residents live below the extreme poverty line, surviving on less than $4.20 per day, as reported by the World Bank in April.

In response to the disaster, the government has decided to permanently close the landfill, citing the heightened risk, particularly during the rainy season. The waste will now be relocated outside Conakry.
