Amorim explains new Chukwueze role in Milan

AC Milan's manager, Ruben Amorim, clarified the rationale behind Samuel Chukwueze's transition to a wing-back role for the upcoming season, attributing it to the player's spirit and character rather than his defensive abilities, according to PUNCH Sports Extra. The Nigerian had initially been used in a more attacking position during pre-season, but Amorim has since employed Chukwueze in that defensive role, contrary to some fan opinions about his defensive skills.

Speaking at a press conference, Amorim emphasized that the key to excelling in the wing-back position lies in a player's mentality, rather than his defensive prowess. He stated, "Defending is about spirit and character, which Chukwueze has." Although Chukwueze may not be a traditional defender, Amorim believes the Nigerian can contribute significantly to controlling the ball, as evidenced by his improved performance against Manchester United.

When questioned about whether his use of Chukwueze is similar to how he managed Amad Diallo during his tenure at Manchester United, Amorim explained that the Italian football landscape demands a different balance between attacking freedom and defensive discipline. He noted, "I realise here a winger is more of a full-back in Italy, but we want to play more with the ball than without the ball.

We want to defend really well, but I believe we defend well with the ball." Chukwueze, who returned to Milan after a successful loan stint at Fulham, is expected to maintain his role in the wing-back formation, with the club eager to assess if he can contribute additional assists to his already substantial tally in the position.
