Umno must balance principles and electoral strategy in Melaka, says analyst

A political analyst has advised the Malaysian United Malays National Organisation (Umno) to strike a balance between upholding its principles and pursuing its electoral strategy in the upcoming Melaka state election. This comes after Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh decided against defending his Merlimau state assembly seat if a potential alliance between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) were to materialise.

Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri, a political analyst with Global Asia Consulting, believes that Akmal's refusal to participate in a BN-PH cooperation is a test of Umno's willingness to compromise. He asserts that principles can garner admiration, but strategy is what ultimately brings victory.

Political analyst Kamarul Zaman Yusoff concurs, stating that Umno and BN must consider whether they can retain their core supporters while also attracting undecided voters. Akmal's decision to stand down from the election, he notes, demonstrates his confidence that a BN-PH partnership in Melaka is unlikely.

Zaharuddin acknowledges that such a BN-PH coalition might be sensible from an electoral standpoint, but warns that it could alienate some Umno constituents, potentially drawing them towards the opposition party Perikatan Nasional. However, Afifi Abdul Razak from Universiti Utara Malaysia argues that Akmal's absence from the election may modestly impact BN's appeal among young voters in Melaka, but will not necessarily alter the party's prospects for winning the state.

Afifi acknowledges Akmal's choice as a principled sacrifice, suggesting that while it may damage his political career in the short term, it could ultimately prove beneficial for him in the long run. He emphasizes that Umno and BN's strength in Melaka is not solely dependent on any single individual, but rather on the robustness of their organisational structure, candidates, and the prevailing political climate.
