The $1.7bn GOLDBOD losses sit in the books of the Bank of Ghana - Dr Adu Owusu Sarkodie

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has pledged to persist in advocating for the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), despite mounting criticism and personal attacks. This stance emerged following a heated debate between the NPP's minority faction and GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, over allegations of the state-owned gold-trading institution incurring substantial financial losses in 2025.

According to Gyamfi, GoldBod reported losses amounting to approximately GH¢22 billion (around US$1.7 billion) during the government's Accountability Series. However, Afenyo-Markin expressed his determination to remain undeterred by the hostile remarks and insinuations aimed at him. Speaking to Metro TV, Afenyo-Markin affirmed that he is prepared to endure the attacks as part of his duty to the NPP and would not resort to legal action against his critics.

He emphasized that his family has made considerable sacrifices for the party and Ghana, and he is committed to fighting for the NPP with an unclouded mind. The Minority Leader stressed that the concerns regarding GoldBod's reported losses are grounded in factual evidence and aimed at serving the public interest. He urged the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to accept the responsibility for the reported losses and collaborate with the opposition to rectify the situation.

Afenyo-Markin also highlighted the need for the NDC to acknowledge any policy mistakes that may have contributed to the losses and work together to find a solution. He reiterated that political disagreements would not impede his respect for the offices and institutions of state. Despite facing criticism, Afenyo-Markin affirmed that he will continue to investigate the GoldBod issue and seek answers, undeterred by the personal attacks he has received.
