Surat Thani seeks visa revocation for Israeli, French nationals over Palestinian flag dispute

Security officials in Surat Thani are seeking to revoke the visas and deport two foreigners who are embroiled in a dispute over a Palestinian flag on the island of Koh Samui. The situation, which began on August 22nd, started when an Israeli tourist visited the Samui Exotic Park and argued with the park's owner, Kevin, a French businessman.

Kevin subsequently displayed a Palestinian flag and a welcoming message for Palestinians at the attraction. Israeli restaurant owner Jacob, who has lived on Samui for around five years on a business visa, then contacted Kevin to remove the flag, but Kevin refused. The exchange was shared on social media, which escalated the dispute and led to legal action.

Kevin was fined 5,000 baht and given a two-year suspended prison sentence by the Samui Provincial Court. The dispute then worsened after an Israeli influencer based in France offered a 500,000-baht reward for information leading to Kevin. This led to concerns that the situation could damage Samui's tourism industry and create security issues.

Authorities warned that the original dispute was just a personal conflict between the two individuals and not a broader conflict between Israeli tourists and local residents. They also cautioned against the dispute being turned into an anti-Israel issue that could escalate into religious or ethnic tensions. Surat Thani officials are now compiling information to present to a provincial committee for possible visa revocation and deportation, citing the individuals' failure to resolve the dispute and the potential for further escalation.
