Maharashtra Sets Clear Service Standards For Government Hospitals To Improve Patient Care

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has established clear service standards for government hospitals to enhance patient care across the public health system. These standards dictate the services available at various hospital levels, determined by bed capacity. Health Commissioner tasked with implementing new norms.

Key standards include staffing patterns, essential medicines, and advanced healthcare facilities. For instance, 30-bed rural hospitals are expected to offer 74 diagnostic services, while district, general, and women’s hospitals must provide 134. Essential medicines lists include 403 types for sub-district hospitals, 438 for district hospitals, and 426 for referral service hospitals, with periodic updates.

The government also mandates specialized medical officers at specified bed capacities and other trained professionals like laboratory technicians, pharmacists, and physiotherapists. Additional manpower is required for advanced facilities such as CT scans and dialysis, which will be phased in across various hospital types.

Hospitals must maintain essential infrastructure, including laboratories, operation theatres, maternity, immunisation, and post-mortem facilities. Dialysis services will be introduced gradually, and AYUSH services (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) will be made available at designated hospitals. Every facility will have an ambulance and provide various citizen services like disability certificates and medical fitness registration.
