Mizzou falls 1-0 to SLU despite record crowd

Missouri State University (Mizzou) suffered a 1-0 defeat to in-state rival Saint Louis University (SLU) in their home opener, despite drawing a record crowd of 2,324 fans and a standout performance from senior goalkeeper Kate Phillips, who made seven crucial saves. Walton Stadium, packed with students who spilled out into the surrounding areas, witnessed the largest attendance in the stadium's history, surpassing the previous record of 1,926.

The game marked the first opportunity for Mizzou students to earn points towards football tickets under the new ticketing model, which likely contributed to the high energy and large turnout.

Initially, the Missouri attack, defined by sporadic bursts of speed under the frenzy of the game, failed to maintain offensive pressure, netting no goals in the first 70 minutes. Head coach Golan lamented, "We wanted to switch the point of attack, and we didn’t do that." The breakthrough came when SLU converted a penalty kick awarded following a handball by junior forward Mia Deveroux, who sent the ball into the net from close range, giving Saint Louis a one-goal lead.

The energy in Walton Stadium began to wane, with the Tigers struggling to sustain their offensive efforts and failing to create a single shot in the first half.

Senior midfielder Jennette Fieldsend's conversion from 12 yards sealed the deal for SLU, and the Tigers couldn't muster any rhythm following the goal. Phillips continued to shine, finishing the half with five saves, including a remarkable acrobatic one-handed save to deny a curling 18-yard shot from the Billikens. Despite Phillips' continued impressive performance, Mizzou's best scoring opportunity came in the 88th minute, when sophomore Aly Bryant's shot from outside the box was saved by the Saint Louis goalkeeper, preserving the 1-0 lead.

Missouri's defense, while able to limit SLU's chances, struggled to produce a significant offensive threat, and their inability to maintain possession and create scoring opportunities proved costly. Senior midfielder Olivia Chianelli provided crucial defensive support in the center, disrupting SLU's attacks and creating a few promising chances. However, the second half saw a continued decline in the Tigers' inspiration, as a record number of fans began to depart the stadium.

Mizzou's lone shot on target, delivered by senior forward Brianna Buels, was easily collected by the Saint Louis goalkeeper, leaving the clean sheet intact. The Tigers' coach acknowledged their lack of execution, stating, "We know that we didn’t execute. We just got to get back in training and continue to hammer it until we do it consistently." Mizzou now faces another in-state opponent, Missouri State, in their next home game.
