Commanders dealing with multiple running back injuries

The Washington Commanders are facing a significant challenge with their running backs after suffering multiple injuries during training camp. The team, already thin at the position, will need to carefully manage their limited resources. During Thursday's practice, backup Jacory Croskey-Merritt, known as Bill, appeared to pull up slightly after catching a pass, raising concerns about his condition.

However, the most serious injury is to starting running back Jerome Ford, who was injured during last week's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. Ford suffered a severe hamstring injury, leading the team to place him on injured reserve and rule him out for the season. His absence is a major blow, as Ford had gained 813 rushing yards in 2023 and averaged 5.4 yards per carry in 2024 on 104 attempts.

Another running back, Rachaad White, has also been dealing with a hamstring issue. White missed the preseason game against the Dolphins due to the injury, which was sustained during a scrimmage two days earlier. While White's injury is less severe than Ford's, he is ruled out for Saturday's preseason game against the Lions. Lastly, the team's own backup running back, Jeremy McNichols, has a well-documented quadriceps injury.

McNichols has missed several weeks and his chances of making the roster have diminished following the performances of rookies Kaytron Allen and Robert Henry Jr. Both rookies showcased impressive skills, and barring injury, they are expected to receive ample playing time in upcoming games.

To compensate for the loss of Ford, the Commanders have signed Craig Reynolds, formerly of the Patriots and Lions, who was released after the preseason. Reynolds, an undrafted free agent, previously played for Washington from 2019 to 2025. With the team's scarcity of running backs, giving Reynolds ample opportunities to showcase his skills during the upcoming scrimmage and preseason game against the Ravens could prove beneficial.
