2027: Obi Pledges to Run Campaign Devoid of Ethnicity, Religion

In the lead-up to the 2027 Nigerian general election, presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has made significant pledges regarding his campaign strategy. Speaking at a press conference in Onitsha, Anambra State, Obi emphasized his commitment to running a campaign that is free from influences of ethnicity and religion.

Obi spoke about the critical nature of this election, stating that it is a defining moment for Nigeria's democracy. He highlighted the opportunity it presents for Nigerians to evaluate the records, ideas, and plans of the candidates seeking their mandate to lead the country during a period of significant global uncertainty.

The NDC leader detailed the myriad challenges facing Nigeria, including a high poverty rate, food insecurity, displacement due to conflict, youth unemployment, weak infrastructure, unreliable power supply, insecurity, and the high cost of doing business. Each of these issues, he noted, are not merely figures on paper but represent the daily struggles of Nigerians.

In his address to journalists, Obi pledged to run a campaign that encourages honest debate based on facts, not hatred, violence, or the weakening of the unity among Nigerians. He urged citizens to scrutinize each candidate's past performance and proposed solutions, demanding concrete evidence for any promises made.

Obi also outlined his vision for a unified Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of leveraging the country's diverse regional strengths. He argued that each of Nigeria's six geopolitical zones—North-west, North-east, North-central, South-west, South-east, and the Federal Capital Territory—has unique assets that can be harnessed to build a stronger, more productive national economy.

For the North-west, Obi suggested focusing on agriculture, livestock, irrigation, agro-processing, manufacturing, education, and security. The North-east, he proposed, should prioritize reconstruction, restoring livelihoods, agriculture, education, enterprise, and regional trade. The North-central region could benefit from stronger food production and processing, as well as responsible development of mineral resources.

The South-west, known for its manufacturing, technology, finance, trade, and creative economy, could continue to expand in these sectors. The South-east could enhance its entrepreneurial and industrial strength through improved infrastructure, better connectivity, and increased investment access. Lastly, the Federal Capital Territory should serve as a model for efficient urban planning, transportation, housing, sanitation, and public services.

Obi also spoke about his own background in governance, crediting his private-sector experience, academic qualifications, and tenure as Governor of Anambra State for his understanding of public leadership. He stressed the importance of responsible resource management, setting clear priorities, and measuring the outcomes of decisions. Obi expressed assurance that his team will listen to the needs of Nigerians, understand their concerns, and assure them of their ability to lead and revitalize Nigeria for the benefit of all.
