PTA, Google to collaborate on strengthening children's online safety

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Google have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to bolster children’s online safety. This agreement aims to enhance awareness, digital safety, and responsible usage of online platforms among children, parents, teachers, and caregivers throughout Pakistan. The authorities plan to work together on a child safety program centered on "awareness, education, and capacity-building," providing parents and educators with practical tools and resources to help children safely navigate the digital world.

The collaboration includes creating awareness content in English and local languages, conducting training programs in educational institutions, and supporting a nationwide outreach campaign to connect millions of families with localized online safety resources and tutorials. PTA Chairman (retd) Maj Gen Hafeezur Rehman emphasized the significance of collective efforts and stakeholder collaboration in safeguarding children in an increasingly digital landscape.

Dr Khawar Siddique, a member of the authority’s compliance and enforcement team, stressed the importance of promoting digital literacy and responsible use of online platforms to foster a safer environment for children and families in Pakistan.

The partnership underscores the shared commitment of the PTA and Google to empower parents and teachers, boost digital awareness, and establish a more secure online environment. This collaboration follows Google's recent inauguration of its local office in Pakistan, marking a significant milestone in the company's engagement with the country.

A meeting between Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry and a Google delegation on Wednesday further highlighted the importance of enhanced cooperation to promote a safe and peaceful digital environment in Pakistan, particularly in light of the nation's security challenges.
