PTA, Google to collaborate on strengthening children's online safety

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Google have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance children's online safety. The collaboration aims to boost awareness, digital security, and responsible use of online platforms among children, parents, educators, and caregivers throughout Pakistan. The agreement highlights joint efforts to create a child safety program centered on "awareness, education, and capacity-building," providing parents and teachers with practical tools to guide children safely through the digital world.

Key initiatives include producing educational content in English and local languages, conducting training sessions in educational institutions, and supporting a nationwide outreach campaign to distribute localized online safety resources and tutorials. Upon signing the MoU, PTA Chairman (retd) Maj Gen Hafeezur Rehman emphasized the collective responsibility to safeguard children in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

Dr Khawar Siddique, a member of the authority's compliance and enforcement team, stressed the necessity of promoting digital literacy and responsible online behavior to foster a safer digital ecosystem for children and families in Pakistan.

The partnership underscores both organizations' shared dedication to empowering parents and educators, enhancing digital awareness, and fostering a more secure online environment. This development follows Google's recent inauguration of its local office in Pakistan, marking a significant milestone in its engagement with the nation, nearly four years after registering in the country.

Earlier this week, Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry met with a Google delegation to discuss bolstering cooperation for a safe and secure digital environment, advocating for proactive monitoring of social media given Pakistan's security challenges.
