Ogun community boils as police allegedly shoot Oro festival celebrant dead

Tension has gripped the Ifonyintedo community in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State following the alleged shooting death of a young man, Owolabi Oniyiku, by police officers at a checkpoint. According to reports, Oniyiku was shot in the chest on Wednesday while celebrating the Oro festival with family and friends. A 18-second video of his lifeless body went viral, with protesters shouting, "Police officers in Idiroko have killed someone."

The incident occurred after a police patrol checkpoint was set ablaze on Tuesday night. Oniyiku, who was on his way to the Ilashe garage to return a friend's motorcycle, reportedly stopped at a blocked road in the Ifejido area where the police checkpoint had been affected by the earlier attack. The situation escalated into an argument, leading to Oniyiku being shot and dying at the scene.

The Police Public Relations Officer confirmed that the officers involved had been arrested, and the Police Command is investigating the case. The National Youth Council of Nigeria has condemned the killing and demanded an independent probe, a review of all checkpoints, and action within seven days.
