AI skills in cybersecurity job postings doubled as junior hiring stalls

The AI Workforce Consortium unveiled a report showing a doubling of AI skills in cybersecurity job postings within the G7 economies over the past year. Despite this increase, hiring for junior roles has remained stagnant. AI skills were mentioned in 28.5% of postings, compared to 14.2% a year prior. The most sought-after skill was hands-on experience with AI agents, cited by 49% of employers as a gap in entry-level candidates.

Technical cybersecurity depth and human skills followed, each in demand by 48% and 45% of employers respectively. The survey also revealed a significant budget allocation towards AI-powered defense (36%), while people and threat intelligence were prioritized by 25% each. A cyber-espionage campaign involving Anthropic's Claude model and autonomous ransomware operations were also highlighted.

The report suggests that as employers seek senior AI skills for junior roles, roles are evolving to focus on supervising agents and evaluating their work. The tier-one security operations center analyst is a prime example of this shift. Ethical reasoning and systems thinking saw the highest growth in listings, with ethical reasoning up 533% and systems thinking up 251% year-over-year.

The report also noted that one in five breached organizations had a breach involving shadow AI tools, leading to an additional $670,000 in breach costs. Organizations with robust governance around autonomous systems were found to fare better.
