Sion ROB Reconstruction Progress Update: BMC Eyes September 30 Deadline, Pushes To Complete Work Ahead Of Schedule

Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a new deadline for the Sion Bridge reconstruction project, aiming to complete it by September 30, 2026, five months before the original February 2027 due date. The Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2) is responsible for the bridge's reconstruction, with Central Railway handling the main bridge and the BMC addressing the renewal and strengthening of approach roads within civic limits.

BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the ongoing work and directed officials to accelerate the project, ensuring its completion ahead of schedule. The approach road connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Road to Sant Rohidas Road on Dharavi is also progressing, with a new underground pedestrian walkway opened for pedestrians on February 20, 2026, and another completed and opened to the public on July 14.

Central Railway has launched the second 500-tonne semi-through steel girder over the railway tracks on August 9, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the project. Once the girder is positioned on its bearings, the deck slab work on both girders will commence. Central Railway is currently using space on the eastern side of the bridge for railway-related work, while the BMC is prepared to complete the approach road work within about 45 days after receiving possession of the site.

The Sion Bridge project aims to enhance connectivity around the Sion-Dharavi corridor and provide safer pedestrian movement through the newly constructed underground walkways.
