OpenAI launches teen version of ChatGPT with built-in safety features

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a modified version of its chatbot tailored for younger users aged 13 to 17. This new experience automatically activates when OpenAI's algorithms determine the user's age is below 18 or if the user self-identifies as being in the 13-17 age range. The primary objective of this product is to encourage teenagers to tackle problems independently instead of receiving direct answers.

For students preparing for exams, the system offers features such as explanations of unfamiliar concepts, step-by-step solutions to practice problems, and self-assessment tools to gauge their understanding. If a user appears to be seeking a direct answer to an assignment, ChatGPT redirects them to Study Mode, which guides them through the reasoning process rather than providing the answer outright.

In addition to these safety features, the system incorporates prompts that discourage users from skipping assignments and directs them towards quizzes and visual learning aids. A new Study Hours feature allows teens or their parents to schedule periods during which Study Mode will automatically turn on. This feature was developed in collaboration with educators, researchers, and learning specialists to ensure its effectiveness in promoting healthy learning habits among young users.
