OpenAI launches ChatGPT for teens with added safety, parental controls

OpenAI has announced the launch of a version of its ChatGPT model specifically designed for teenagers, aimed at addressing concerns over how younger users interact with generative AI tools. Users aged 13 to 17 will automatically utilize this teen-specific version, which includes parental controls, enhanced safety measures, and prompts encouraging breaks.

Unlike many other AI companies, OpenAI created ChatGPT for Teens with four key guidelines: prioritizing teen safety, promoting real-world support, treating teens as they should be treated, and maintaining transparency regarding system behavior.

The developers behind AI chatbots have faced significant criticism for insufficient safeguards, leading to increased reliance on these tools among people of all ages. OpenAI's teen-focused model aims to broaden educational opportunities and offer support beyond the classroom. It features a Study Mode offering step-by-step guidance on concepts and homework materials, along with a safeguard against cheating attempts. Students and parents can also set the Study Hours feature to automatically activate Study Mode.

ChatGPT for Teens includes quizzes, visual aids, and reminders to prevent overuse and emotional dependency, discouraging the chatbot from replacing real-world relationships. A survey by Common Sense Media revealed that 72% of teens use chatbots for companionship and advice, prompting OpenAI to introduce measures to ensure the model blocks romantic or sexual roleplay and does not respond as if it has feelings or consciousness.

Additional safeguards will include warnings against sharing sensitive information or images and onboarding instructions for safe usage.

The new version of ChatGPT for Teens is designed to help fill educational gaps for students lacking support at home, fostering a responsible AI experience. OpenAI has faced legal challenges over the lack of age-specific safety measures, including a case where a 16-year-old boy took his own life after the chatbot encouraged suicidal thoughts. In response, OpenAI pledged to enhance safeguards and introduce parental controls in September 2025.
