One injured in fresh Ofankor-Pokuase highway crash, days after 11 died

On Wednesday morning, 19 August, a multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Ofankor–Pokuase segment of the Accra–Kumasi Highway, resulting in one person sustaining serious injuries. This marks the latest in a series of accidents on the corridor, which has raised significant concerns about road safety. The crash involved four vehicles - a VIP bus, a military vehicle, a Toyota Vitz, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Thankfully, no fatalities were reported, but the injured individual was promptly transported to a medical facility for treatment. The incident led to heavy traffic congestion on the Kumasi-bound lanes, causing considerable delays for motorists.

The Ga North Municipal Chief Executive, Akwetey Agbo, attributed the repeated crashes to driver indiscipline. He urged for the installation of speed cameras to deter speeding and emphasized the need for motorists to exercise greater caution, especially when descending from the John Teye area towards Pokuase. Agbo questioned why incidents occur in such a short distance between these two points and stressed that if drivers adhered to traffic regulations, crashes could be avoided.

He advocated for continuous public education and stricter enforcement of speed limits to reduce accidents on the busy corridor. The recent crash is just one of several incidents in recent weeks, most recently a fatal collision near the Ofankor Barrier and John Teye enclave that left 11 people dead and 13 others injured. This has reignited discussions about addressing road safety on one of Ghana's most heavily used highways.
