Crash with Immigration Dept truck at KL’s Maju Junction kills three family members

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — A tragic accident involving a Malaysian Immigration Department truck at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection in Kuala Lumpur resulted in the death of three family members and injured another. The incident occurred around 1 am when the unladen Isuzu 'Black Maria' truck, driven by a 43-year-old local man, ran a red light at the intersection while en route to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office for an operation against illegal immigrants.

According to JSPT chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old local man was traveling straight through the green light and collided with the truck, causing it to lose control and strike four pedestrians, all members of the same family. The victims were a 53-year-old man, his 25-year-old daughter, and 12-year-old daughter; his 55-year-old wife suffered injuries to her head, arm, and both legs and is currently receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The drivers of both the JIM truck and the Proton Saga were unhurt. Both drivers were detained for the investigation, and breathalyzer and preliminary urine tests returned negative for alcohol and drug use. Police are further investigating the scene, including obtaining CCTV footage and identifying independent witnesses, as per Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The public is encouraged to provide information on the incident to the Jalan Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station or any nearby police station.
