3 pedestrians killed in immigration truck crash at KL intersection

At approximately 1am this morning, a tragic incident unfolded at Maju Junction in Kuala Lumpur, resulting in the deaths of three pedestrians who were struck by an immigration department truck. The accident occurred as the immigration vehicle, en route to the Chow Kit area to apprehend undocumented migrants, navigated the intersection.

The truck, driven by a 43-year-old officer with its beacon and siren activated, entered the junction while the traffic light in its direction was red. Simultaneously, a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old man, who had the green light, collided with the immigration truck, causing it to skid and strike four pedestrians and another stationary vehicle.

The victims, all family members, included a 53-year-old father, a 25-year-old daughter, and a 12-year-old daughter. Their mother, aged 55, sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. The truck's drivers and the Proton Saga's driver were promptly arrested for investigation purposes. Their breathalyser and urine tests, however, yielded negative results, indicating no alcohol involvement.

The incident has been classified as causing death by reckless driving under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, and authorities are actively probing the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
