[UPDATED] Three killed after Immigration truck runs red light at KL intersection

A tragic collision claimed the lives of three family members on the streets of Kuala Lumpur early this morning. The incident unfolded at around 1am near Maju Junction, on Jalan Sultan Ismail, as an immigration department truck made its way to a detention operation in the Chow Kit area. The immigration vehicle, driven by a 43-year-old officer, was equipped with its beacon and siren, as the traffic light in its direction was red, indicating a halt.

In parallel, a Proton Saga, driven by a 50-year-old man, was proceeding straight through the junction when the traffic light in his direction was green. Despite the signal, he failed to evade the immigration truck and collided with it. The impact caused the truck to skid, eventually crashing into four pedestrians, as well as another vehicle that had come to a stop at the intersection.

Among the victims, the father, aged 53, and his two daughters, aged 25 and 12, succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The mother, 55, is currently receiving medical treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur for various injuries. Remarkably, none of the drivers involved sustained any injuries. Following the crash, both drivers - those of the immigration truck and the Proton Saga - were apprehended to aid in the ongoing investigation.

Subsequently, both drivers provided samples for breathalyzer and urine tests, which confirmed they were sober at the time of the accident. The case is now under investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, specifically pertaining to causing death through reckless driving.
