China’s Wang Yi to visit Jakarta for diplomacy, defense talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to travel to Jakarta this week for a series of diplomatic and defense talks aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries. The visit comes after recent reports of a joint naval drill between Indonesia and China in waters off Taiwan, which analysts believe may help to reinvigorate relations that have been relatively subdued for several years.

Wang Yi is expected to be in Jakarta from Thursday to Saturday, where he will engage in a range of discussions with his Indonesian counterpart. These talks will cover a variety of issues, including bilateral economic and political matters, as well as regional and global security concerns. On Friday, the two sides will hold the Indonesia-China Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue (CSD), which will focus on the state of bilateral ties and future cooperation between the two nations.

This new foreign ministerial-level bilateral mechanism was established during Foreign Minister Sugiono's visit to Beijing in April 2025.

In addition to the CSD meeting, Wang Yi will also participate in a 2+2 meeting between the foreign and defense ministers of both countries. The purpose of this meeting is to strengthen cooperation on political, defense, and security affairs at bilateral, regional, and global levels. According to a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, these two strategic meetings demonstrate the growing comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and China. However, no official statements from Chinese authorities have been made at the time of writing.
