GoldBod to fund rehabilitation of six water treatment plants affected by mining

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) plans to fully fund the rehabilitation of six water treatment plants damaged by poor water quality caused by irresponsible mining and other activities. CEO Sammy Gyamfi announced this during his keynote speech at the National Mining Dialogue 2026, which took place on August 18 under the theme "Rethinking the Social License to Operate."

This initiative is part of GoldBod's Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policy, aimed at addressing environmental and social consequences linked to mining. The first three plants, Daboase, Sekyere Hemang and Bonsa, serve communities in the Western and Central Regions, and collectively, these plants provide water to more than 76 communities and approximately 100,000 users.

Gyamfi revealed that the remaining three water treatment plants, Kwanyako, Baifikrom and Essagyir, will also receive full funding for rehabilitation next year. This decision reflects GoldBod's commitment to mitigating the impact of irresponsible mining on essential public infrastructure and potable water access. Gyamfi emphasized that this action demonstrates the mining sector's need for greater responsibility for the social and environmental consequences of its activities.

The National Mining Dialogue, organized by Asempa 94.7 FM and its Ekosiisen programme in partnership with Semmis DS and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, was the platform for this announcement.
