Ghana needs copyright protection for Kente designs – Agortime-Ziope MP
Charles Agbeve, the Member of Parliament for Agortime-Ziope, has called for stronger copyright protection for Kente designs to prevent unauthorised reproduction and protect the livelihoods of local weavers.
Charles Agbeve, the Member of Parliament representing Agortime-Ziope, is advocating for enhanced copyright safeguards for Kente designs. He expressed concern that unapproved replication and commercial production of traditional Kente designs, both within and outside Ghana, are eroding the livelihoods of local weavers and stifling the industry.
During the 31st Kente Festival Celebration in Kpetoe, Mr Agbeve emphasized that the current lack of copyright protection is undermining the Kente weaving sector and discouraging artisans from dedicating their time and creativity to developing innovative designs. He warned that the ability to quickly replicate designs and have them produced in countries like China is detrimental to the industry.
Mr Agbeve, a member of the Parliament’s Committee on Trade, Industry and Tourism, stated that efforts are underway to tackle intellectual property issues impacting Kente and other crucial Ghanaian fabrics. He proposed extending copyright protection beyond Kente to other indigenous textiles and creative products susceptible to unauthorized reproduction.
Additionally, Mr Agbeve suggested incorporating Kente studies into the curriculum at Ho Technical University, enabling students to learn about the fabric's history, production, and cultural importance. He also proposed providing practical knowledge about Kente weaving to students, particularly those pursuing Arts and related programs, through visits to Agortime and interactions with master weavers.
By combining education, copyright protection, and economic support, Mr Agbeve believes the Kente weaving industry can transition from a cultural heritage product to a sustainable creative sector that generates employment and income for local communities.
