DRC's Deadliest Ebola Outbreak Is a Warning for Africa

The deadliest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has become a stark warning for the entire African continent. The epidemic is killing someone approximately every 30 minutes, surpassing the death toll of the 2014-2016 West African outbreak within three months. Researchers believe the virus may have been circulating undetected since February, raising concerns about the true scale of transmission.

Situated at the heart of a highly connected region, the DRC shares borders with nine countries, making it difficult to contain the disease. Uganda has already confirmed 20 cases, while cases have been treated in Germany and France. The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, particularly rare and with no approved vaccine, poses an additional challenge for healthcare workers.

Despite previous outbreaks, Africa has not adequately prepared for a major Ebola crisis. Conflicting factors like conflict, poverty, weak healthcare infrastructure, and population movement hinder disease surveillance and control. The WHO aims to control transmission within three months, but the outbreak will likely persist until neighbouring countries strengthen surveillance and African governments enhance emergency health systems.

Research institutions must also receive funding to develop vaccines for such diseases. Ultimately, health security is intertwined with economic security, and an uncontrolled outbreak could have severe economic consequences for the continent.
