Torquay's Jay hopes late win can kickstart away form

Matt Jay, the Torquay United match-winner, expressed his hope that his late goal secured in their first away game of the National League South season could kickstart the team's away form. The 83rd-minute goal secured a 2-1 victory for the Gulls over Chelmsford City, their first away win since early October last year. Jay's goal came after nearly two years since his previous strike for the club, which occurred on 10 March.

The former Exeter City captain, who has had an up-and-down time at Torquay since joining in January 2025, scored his seventh goal in 20 games during his first half-season. However, his impact diminished last term with only four goals in 22 starts and 18 substitute appearances. Despite a disappointing season last year, Jay feels positive about the current campaign, hoping to secure regular playing time and contribute to the team's improved away performance.
