Nashik: A businessman from Malegaon has been duped of ₹35 lakh in what authorities allege was a fraudulent scheme linked to the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. According to the complaint filed at the Nashik Road Police Station, the businessman was promised a significant contract worth ₹300 crore for road construction as part of the Kumbh Mela tender process.
To convince the businessman, the accused allegedly created fake government documents, work orders, and forged signatures, including the digital signature of Kumbh Mela Authority chairman Dr. Praveen Gedam. The investigation uncovered that the documents utilized a Nashik Municipal Corporation tender notice number, and police found the letterheads, digital signatures, and official seal were false, designed to make the documents appear authentic.
The businessman initially paid ₹50 lakh to the accused, with ₹15 lakh later returned. When the remaining ₹35 lakh was not delivered, the businessman suspected fraud and sought police assistance.
