CJI Surya Kant no longer TISS convocation chief guest, Tata Memorial director named

The 86th convocation of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) will now be presided over by Tata Memorial Hospital director Dr C S Pramesh, replacing Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The CJI's scheduled appearance at the ceremony was postponed, leading to a last-minute cancellation. Originally set for August 2, the event was postponed two days earlier due to "unforeseen circumstances" that prevented a "conducive environment" for its holding.

Security concerns, including possible protests and inadequate arrangements, were cited as reasons for the postponement. TISS declined to disclose the specific issues. In an official statement, the institute noted that proceeding with the original schedule could have jeopardized the well-being of students, faculty, staff, and dignitaries.

The invitation for the rescheduled convocation now names Pramesh as the chief guest. The institute has not commented on whether the change was due to the CJI's withdrawal or a decision made by the institute itself to address security concerns. The postponement left graduating students and their families disappointed, as many had already arranged travel.

TISS subsequently assured financial assistance to affected students on a case-by-case basis. The rescheduled ceremony is scheduled for August 22.
