Who is Brian Mundubile? Man who has emerged as Hichilema’s main challenger in Zambia

Brian Muntayalwa Mundubile, born on January 5, 1971, is a prominent Zambian opposition figure who has emerged as the leading challenger to President Hakainde Hichilema in the upcoming 2026 presidential election. Hailing from Mporokoso in Northern Zambia, Mundubile is married and has a distinguished professional background in accounting and law, holding qualifications such as ACCA, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), a Diploma in Legislative Drafting, and a Master of Laws (LLM).

Mundubile's political journey began with his election as a Member of Parliament for Mporokoso Constituency in 2016, a position he retained in the 2021 general election. Prior to his opposition role, he served in government under former President Edgar Lungu, holding key positions such as Provincial Minister for Northern Province and Government Chief Whip.

After the Patriotic Front (PF) lost the 2021 election to Hichilema's United Party for National Development (UPND), Mundubile became the Leader of the Opposition in Zambia's National Assembly, but was later removed from the position amid internal party changes in 2023.

Following the death of the former president in June 2025, Mundubile shifted his focus to the upcoming electoral campaign, aligning himself with the Tonse Alliance, a coalition of opposition parties. He was selected as the Tonse Alliance presidential candidate in January 2026, a position he secured amid internal opposition divisions and disagreements over the future direction of the PF.

Mundubile's campaign emphasized issues such as the cost of living, poverty, agriculture, unemployment, and democratic freedoms, arguing that economic improvements under Hichilema had not sufficiently enhanced the living conditions for ordinary Zambians. He also criticized what he perceived as attacks on democratic institutions and human rights under the Hichilema administration.
