Thousands await aid after deadly Indonesian quake

Ruteng, Indonesia - Thousands of evacuees are awaiting assistance in the aftermath of a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Flores island early Saturday, killing 48 people and injuring at least 101. The quake was followed by at least 341 aftershocks, leaving many without electricity and telecommunications. Some 5,000 people fled their homes, with residents in the north coast village of Nangahale describing their fear and trauma.

The death toll has risen by one since Saturday night. The quake's epicenter was located just off the island's north coast, and affected areas have few high-rise buildings. At least 914 houses were severely damaged, and dozens of public facilities, including 93 educational and 36 health facilities, were impacted. International aid is on its way, including five helicopters, several planes, a naval vessel, search and rescue ships, and humanitarian aid packages from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the European Union.
