Third time lucky? Amirudin asks on Malay parties’ latest union

During the concluding session of the 2026 PKR Congress, Vice President Amirudin Shari quipped about Malay-based parties repeatedly uniting and subsequently breaking apart. He reminded listeners that such cooperation had occurred in the 1970s and 1990s, noting that these alliances had ended in parting ways. Amirudin remarked that this was the third such union, implying that the parties involved had previously "married" and then "divorced."

While he did not explicitly name the parties, it is understood that he is referring to Umno and PAS, which have a history of cooperation followed by disunity. The vice-president suggested that despite the current political challenges, PKR could navigate these difficulties by relying on its reform agenda. Amirudin emphasized that the party must continue to advocate for justice for all, irrespective of race or religion.

He encouraged PKR members to refrain from engaging in race-based politics, which he believed could hinder efforts to bring the community together. Instead, he urged the party to persist in advancing the reform agenda, bolstering its organizational structure, and bridging racial divides beyond election cycles.
