Israeli defence minister Katz says 'no account will remain unsettled'

Defense Minister Israel Katz visited Lebanon on Wednesday, asserting that Israeli Defense Forces ("IDF") will remain in the security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza. He instructed the IDF to prepare for a long-term presence in these areas. The U.S. State Department expressed disapproval, stating that a permanent military presence is inconsistent with previously agreed commitments and poses no territorial ambitions in Lebanon.

The U.S. emphasized its full support for Lebanon's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and the framework does provide for a phased redeployment contingent upon verified disarming of Hezbollah and dismantling its infrastructure. During the visit, Katz stated that IDF has defeated Hezbollah in Beaufort Ridge, captured strategically important areas, and ensures the security of northern communities and soldiers.

He emphasized that the IDF will clear the area and maintain its presence, refusing to withdraw from the security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza. The Minister cited the October 7 incident as proof that the IDF's presence is necessary to protect residents from attacks. IDF officials briefed Katz on the ongoing military operations and preparations for a potential campaign against Hezbollah.
