Syarahan Razak Baginda di UIAM dibatal

A public lecture at the Multi-Ethnic Islamic Research Institute Malaysia (UIAM) featuring political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda has been cancelled. The university explained that the lecture titled "Asia’s Heroes and Villains: A Study of Leadership" was scheduled to be held at the institute's Research and Buddhist Culture Institute on Tuesday. In a Facebook post, the university apologized for any inconvenience that may arise and expressed appreciation for the understanding and respect of its audience.

The cancellation follows concerns raised by UIAM academic staff regarding the event and the selection of Razak, who was found jointly and severally liable for the 2006 murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu. Razak, along with a former government official and two former police officers, was convicted of the crime. UIAM's academic staff suggested several steps if the university decides to proceed with the lecture, including inviting a guest or panelist to provide additional or contrasting perspectives on leadership and accountability.

Given the sensitivity and theme of the lecture on leadership and accountability, they believe that the event would benefit from a more balanced platform. They also proposed the appointment of an impartial moderator to discuss questions related to leadership and accountability directly related to Razak's public history, in line with the principles of open academic inquiry.

They urged UIAM to establish a screening protocol for future guest selection to avoid unnecessary controversy that could damage the university's reputation.
