Strong economic figures alone won’t win over voters, says Fahmi

PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil, speaking at the PKR Congress in Melaka today, urged his party to focus on alleviating the daily economic challenges faced by Malaysians rather than solely relying on strong economic indicators to win voter support. He explained that metrics like GDP growth, unemployment rates, government revenue, and investment inflows represent "the peripheral economy," which may not resonate with the day-to-day realities of ordinary citizens.

Fahmi highlighted the significance of wages, the cost of living, and fuel prices—issues that Malaysians are more acutely aware of. He pointed to the recent Negeri Sembilan state election, where the Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional parties secured 25 seats by forming the state government after winning the majority, as evidence that the government's performance did not suffice to sway voters.

Fahmi emphasized that addressing Malaysians' economic concerns is crucial in countering the tide of emotional politics. He stated that the Negeri Sembilan election demonstrated that fear politics had prevailed over governmental performance, underscoring the necessity of addressing issues close to the people's hearts.
