SPD shares tips on crime prevention and more as kids head back to college

As college students return to campus, the Syracuse Police Department is offering advice on crime prevention and other safety matters. Sergeant Tom Blake of the SPD points out that crime, like any other phenomenon, continues to evolve. Modern threats may not have existed in previous decades.

Sergeant Blake recommends that parents and students communicate their locations with one another. He also advises students to keep their cell phones within reach at all times.

The officer specifically warns about the risks associated with rideshare services like Uber and Lyft. He suggests checking the license plate and performing a "look back" after exiting the vehicle to ensure nothing was left behind.

Scams are a significant concern for college students. Sgt. Blake urges parents to inform their children about the scams prevalent in the area before they leave for school. Furthermore, he emphasizes the importance of locking cars and parking them in secure locations.

To combat car theft, Sergeant Blake reminds students to keep their vehicles locked and parked in safe spots. Additionally, parents should compile a list of serial numbers and identification for essential items their students will bring to college, including the student's cell phone and car.
