Spanish F-18 shoots down drone breaching Romanian airspace in fourth incident this yr

On Sunday, a Spanish F-18 fighter jet engaged and shot down an unauthorized drone that entered Romanian airspace, marking the fourth such incident this year, according to the Romanian defence ministry. The incident occurred approximately 24 km north of the city of Galati, located in southeastern Romania. The source of the drone remained unidentified.

The Spanish fighter jet detected the aircraft, established radar contact, and was cleared to engage the drone. The drone was successfully brought down at 05:01 am, with the wreckage believed to have landed in an uninhabited area between two villages, resulting in no casualties. This marks the fourth time Romania has successfully shot down a drone this year, with three similar incidents occurring in July, all involving Russian drones.

Romania, situated along the Black Sea and sharing a 614-kilometer land border with Ukraine, has faced a series of airspace violations and drone-related security threats originating from the ongoing conflict in neighboring Ukraine. Romania's latest interception follows three similar incidents in July, when Romanian F-16 fighter jets neutralized Russian drones that had breached the country's airspace.

These events represent the first instances of Romanian fighter jets downing Russian drones since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began.

Earlier this year, a Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in Galati during a nighttime attack on Ukraine, injuring two individuals. Additionally, Romania has experienced drone incidents over the Black Sea and along its eastern border. Two weeks ago, Romanian military divers safely dismantled two Gerbera-type drones discovered in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep gas project. Another drone crashed near Luncavita in eastern Romania after approaching Romanian airspace at a low altitude.

These repeated incidents underscore the growing security concerns for NATO's eastern members, as drones linked to the conflict in Ukraine approach or cross allied airspace. NATO officials have emphasized that Russia bears responsibility for these dangerous and unacceptable airspace violations, reflecting Moscow's increasing tolerance for risk.

The latest incident also highlights the crucial role of NATO's air-policing missions in addressing potential threats. The Spanish F-18 involved in Sunday's operation was part of the alliance's air-policing presence in Romania.

Romania has become increasingly reliant on allied aircraft alongside its own fighter jets as drone activity across NATO's eastern flank has intensified. These incidents are particularly sensitive given Romania's proximity to the conflict zone and its strategic position along key Black Sea trade and energy routes.
