Semporna tourism players call for action after viral post

The Semporna Local Bumiputera Tourism Operators Association has called for better waste management, service standards, and enforcement to address tourists' concerns following a viral social media post discouraging visits to the district. Puspabumi secretary Anyrishah Mohd Shah emphasized that Semporna is a complex destination involving numerous stakeholders, necessitating coordinated efforts from local authorities, government agencies, enforcement bodies, Sabah Parks, industry players, boat operators, the community, and tourists.

The secretary acknowledged cleanliness as a frequently raised issue by tourists, requiring an organized waste management system, consistent waste collection, enforcement against littering, and continuous community education. She also highlighted the need for improved boat operators' adherence to standard operating procedures and speed limits, particularly near sensitive areas, and better service standards for industry players, including customer service training and business ethics.

Joint monitoring by maritime agencies and authorities should be strengthened, and local communities should be given organized avenues to earn a living without pressuring tourists. Anyrishah stressed the importance of protecting local livelihoods while maintaining a positive tourist experience, urging tourists to respect the law, environment, restricted areas, safety regulations, and local culture post-awareness.
