Union Home Minister Amit Shah harshly criticized the Congress party on Sunday, accusing them of "shameless" behavior over an incident at the party's Independence Day program in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. Shah alleged that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi had intervened to stop the national song, Vande Mataram, from being completed while it was being sung at the Congress headquarters.

He stated, "Look at their shamelessness," and warned that the act "will never be forgiven by the people of this country." Shah claimed that 140 crore people were watching the proceedings and called upon Congress workers to feel ashamed of the alleged incident. He also demanded an apology from the Congress party to the country and to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the author of the song.

In response, the Congress party rejected Shah's allegation, stating that Sonia Gandhi was merely asking for a chair for Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and that the national song was sung in its entirety without interruption. The BJP has filed a police complaint against Sonia Gandhi over the Vande Mataram controversy, further escalating tensions between the two political parties over the rendition of the national song at Independence Day celebrations.
