Ronaldo hints at retirement, says upcoming year could be his last

Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested he may be nearing the end of his playing career, saying the next year could be his last. The 41-year-old Portuguese captain is one of the most decorated athletes in football history, having won numerous titles with his clubs since turning professional in 2002. Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, did not add to his accolades at the recent World Cup, leaving him without the ultimate international trophy.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, Ronaldo stated, "This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy." Having scored 976 goals for club and country throughout a career that has spanned over two decades, Ronaldo mentioned that he has many other pursuits to keep him occupied. He explained, "I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard.

Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one." Ronaldo also expressed his desire to maintain an active lifestyle, stating, "And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned—what we’ve earned. Because after all it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice."

For the remainder of the 2023 season, Ronaldo will play for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr as he edges closer to reaching the milestone of 1,000 career goals.
