Puad Zarkashi: PAS’s shifting position could put UMNO at risk ahead of GE16

Former UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi warned that uncertainty surrounding PAS's position could pose a significant risk to UMNO ahead of the 16th General Election. The uncertainty stems from PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang's differing interpretations of Bersatu's status within Perikatan Nasional (PN). This ambiguity could complicate any potential political cooperation between UMNO and PAS.

Abdul Hadi's interpretation suggests that Bersatu continues to be a member of PN, a stance that contradicts the PN Constitution. However, PN chairman Dr Ahmad Samsuri maintains that Bersatu was no longer part of PN based on the party's actions. This discrepancy implies a potential internal conflict within the coalition, with Bersatu effectively contesting against its own party in the Negeri Sembilan state election.

Puad's comments highlight the difficulties UMNO might face in forging political cooperation with PAS under these uncertain circumstances. The question arises whether PAS will adhere to the written constitution or interpret guidelines more loosely, creating further complications for any political alliances within the opposition coalition.
