Pork and politics: Canadians bring trade pitch to Iowa state fair

Des Moines, Iowa - During the Iowa State Fair, Canadian pork producers are taking advantage of the bustling event to promote their trade ties with the United States, even as President Donald Trump threatens new tariffs on Canadian goods. Rick Préjet, chair of Manitoba Pork, told reporters that the fair provides an opportunity to remind Iowans of the benefits of their relationship with Canada.

The Canadian delegation, led by Manitoba Pork and supported by agriculture officials from Manitoba, Quebec, and Alberta, met with local politicians, industry groups, and government officials to discuss the importance of their trade relationship. The delegation also participated in the traditional pork chop flip competition and posed for photos with the Iowa Pork Queen.

Manitoba exports more than three million pigs to the United States each year, with a significant portion going directly to Iowa. The Canadian delegation stressed the importance of maintaining the current trade relationship, especially as the United States considers imposing higher tariffs on Canadian products.
