PM Wong conveys condolences after deadly earthquakes in Indonesia

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has extended his condolences to Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto following the deadly earthquakes that struck Indonesia on Saturday, August 15. A magnitude-7.7 earthquake hit off Flores island, resulting in at least 53 deaths and over 130 injuries. Later, a magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck northern Sumatra, but no casualties were reported.

Wong expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives and the devastation caused by the earthquakes. He reached out to both the Indonesian people and the authorities, extending his deepest sympathies. Wong mentioned that the earthquake off Flores island was the deadliest since a 2022 quake in West Java. The Indonesian authorities have declared an emergency in East Nusa Tenggara province, evacuated about 5,000 people, and recorded nearly 1,000 aftershocks since the earthquake, according to the country's disaster agency.

Power supply has been largely restored, although authorities are still working on repairing distribution lines.
