PM Wong conveys condolences after deadly earthquakes in Indonesia

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has expressed condolences to Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto following a series of deadly earthquakes that struck Indonesia on Saturday. The powerful magnitude-7.7 earthquake hit off Flores island, resulting in at least 53 deaths and over 130 injuries. A subsequent magnitude 6.9 quake hit northern Sumatra the following day, though no casualties were reported.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Wong conveyed his deepest sympathies to the families who lost loved ones and to all those affected by the tragedy. He noted his thoughts were with the Indonesian people during this difficult time and the authorities and emergency personnel working diligently on relief and recovery efforts. This quake was Indonesia's deadliest since a 2022 incident in West Java that claimed hundreds of lives.

Emergency declarations have been made in East Nusa Tenggara province, with about 5,000 people evacuated and nearly 1,000 aftershocks recorded since the initial earthquake. While power supply has been largely restored, authorities continue to work on repairing distribution lines, according to state utility firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara.
